  NEC Football Release (10/27)
10/27/2008

RMU's Michael Landers
returns a fumble at Wagner.

printable version

Robert Morris used key contributions from NEC Defensive Player of the Week Michael Landers and NEC Rookie of the Week Shadrae King to rebound from a 20-7 road loss to Bryant by rolling Wagner, 35-3, on Grymes Hill in Staten Island, NY.  David Sinisi of the unbeaten (NEC play) Monmouth Hawks continued to run over opposing defenses on his way to another NEC Offensive Player of the Week award, while NEC Special Teamer of the Week Brian Friedman helped 7-and-1 Sacred Heart to a conference road victory over Duquesne.  Landers played a primary role in three of the Colonials’ six takeaways and scored a defensive touchdown in his team’s 35-3 road victory over Wagner. In addition to recording six tackles (five solo) and two pass break-ups, the junior safety recovered two fumbles and forced another.  Finishing with three receptions for 32 yards and two TDs, King scored twice in the final three minutes of the second quarter to turn a four-point advantage into an 18-point lead at the break.  Sinisi followed up his recent selection to the Walter Payton Award Watch List by once again proving he belongs in the national spotlight. The junior running back rushed for 194 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries to help Monmouth remain undefeated in league play. Sinisi’s four scores in the 30-20 victory over Central Connecticut State ran his career point total to 300, meaning he is tied with former Wagner great Rick Sarille for the NEC’s all-time lead.  Friedman twice revived a late second-quarter scoring drive that trimmed Duquesne’s once 17-point lead to two heading into halftime. With the Pioneers facing a fourth-and-two in punt formation, Friedman successfully executed a fake punt by taking the direct snap and rumbling eight yards for a first down. When the drive stalled at Duquesne’s 13-yard line, Friedman turned what appeared to be a field goal attempt into a touchdown.
