NEC Football Notes (9/11)
CCSU Moves To No. 2 In Sports Network Poll Central Connecticut State scored the biggest win of the weekend and was rewarded with a two-spot jump to the No. 2 position in The Sports Network I-AA Mid Major Poll. The Blue Devils won, 17-13, at Georgia Southern and collected seven first-place votes and 200 total points to claim the No. 2 ranking. Dayton holds steady at No. 3, while Monmouth is up two places to No. 4 after a victory against Morgan State. Albany falls three spots to No. 5 after losing to Fordham. After extending its I-AA best winning streak to 10 games with a 41-7 victory against Dixie State, San Diego once again sits at the top top 10. The Toreros earned 15 of a possible 22 first-place votes and 211 points to claim the top spot. Duquesne drops one position to No. 6, and is followed by Drake at No. 7, Wagner at No. 8, Marist at No. 9 and St. Francis (PA) at No. 10. Marist is back in the rankings this week, while Stony Brook falls out of the top 10. Nine of the top 10 teams are in action this week, with two games between ranked opponents. No. 6 Duquesne hosts No. 10 St. Francis (PA) and No. 8 Wagner visits No. 9 Marist. In other action, No. 1 San Diego visits Yale and No. 5 Albany is at Delaware. (See The Sports Network I-AA Mid Major Top 10 On This Release) NEC Football: Week Two Recap; CCSU Topples Georgia Southern Week two of NEC football turned out to be as exciting as the first week as Central Connecticut State (2-0) capped off the evening with a 17-13 win over No. 13 ranked Georgia Southern at Statesboro, GA. A perennial I-AA power, GSU has won six I-AA National Championships, including back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. On Saturday, CCSU tailback Justise Hairston rushed for 106 yards in the biggest victory in school history and the Blue Devils defense helped force three key Eagle turnovers. On Staten Island, Wagner was also victorious, 7-3, as wide receiver Chris Turner got the Seahawks on the board snaring a nine-yard touchdown, the only TD of the game, in the back of the end zone. The jump ball was thrown by sophomore quarterback Matt Abbey with 12:04 remaining in the contest to hold off intrastate foe Iona at Wagner College Stadium. The home opener for the Seahawks was played on a brand new fieldturf surface. Wagner improves to 2-0 to start the season for the fifth straight year. Monmouth (2-0) won convincingly again on Saturday, topping Morgan State, 26-9 at Kessler Field in West Long Branch. MU held Morgan State to just 151 total yards and a meaningless touchdown midway through the fourth quarter. Redshirt freshman David Sinisi led Monmouth in rushing with 49 yards and a touchdown. Despite outgaining its opponent 304-230 in total yards, Stony Brook (0-2) was shutout by host Georgetown, 7-0, at Washington, D.C. The Hoyas lone touchdown came in the end of the second quarter with quarterback Ben Hostetler connecting with Signey Baker for a six-yarder. SBU backup QB Andrew Garrett threw for 125 yards in the loss. Albany (1-1) struggled offensively as well, falling to Fordham 9-7 at New York's capital city. Great Dane quarterback Daniel Bocanegra was intercepted three times, which led to an early advantage for the Rams. Despite 283 yards on 28-of-41 passing by Pioneer quarterback Tyler Arciaga, Sacred Heart (0-2) fell to Marist, 28-19, at Poughkeepsie, NY. SHU was held to just 26 yards rushing in the game. At Moon Township, PA, Robert Morris (0-2) dropped just its second home opener in school history Saturday afternoon, falling to crosstown rival Duquesne at Joe Walton Stadium, 27-7, in front of a sellout crowd of 3,246. Turnovers were the difference in the game, as Robert Morris committed four on the afternoon, while Duquesne had two. At Dover, DE, Saint Francis was toppled by host Delaware State, 63-28. CCSU Named Sports Network Mid-Major Team of the Week Following an impressive 17-13 victory at I-AA powerhouse Georgia Southern on Saturday, the Central Connecticut football team has been named the Sports Network's Mid-Major Team of the Week, it was released early Monday. The Blue Devils are 2-0 for the first time since 1980 after handing the Eagles just their 18th all-time loss at home in 25 seasons (141-18) on Saturday night. The Blue Devils play on the road on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Southern Connecticut. CCSU is looking to move to 3-0 to start the season for the first time since 1973. Palko Leads Nation In Catches Saint Francis (PA) senior wide receiver is now the NCAA Division I-AA active career leader in receptions with 217 after grabbing five balls versus Delaware State last weekend. Palko’s three receptions in Week 1 jumped him from No. 2 to No. 1 in that category. NEC Begins 2006 Football Television Package The Northeast Conference began the first part of this year’s three-game television package to air on regional outlets throughout the Northeast. The first game of the package aired onSeptember 9 when Robert Morris fell to local rival Duquesne, 27-7, at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, PA. Fox Sports Atlantic aired the game live at 1:00 pm, while Fox Sports-Pittsburgh will aired the contest on tape delay at 4:00 pm. On September 30, Western Pennsylvania counterparts Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA) meet in Loretto for a 4:00 pm kickoff on Fox Sports-Pittsburgh. The package wraps up with a Fox Sports-New York broadcast on October 28 as Monmouth hosts defending NEC champion Central Connecticut State at 12:00 pm. The game will also be televised in Connecticut and Rhode Island by Cox Cable. The 2006 season marks the fourth straight that the NEC has aired football games as part of its extensive regional sports package. This coming winter, the league will air approximately 25 men’s and women’s basketball games. 2006 NEC Football Television Schedule 9/9 Duquesne 27, RMU 7 Fox Atlantic/Pittsburgh Former Monmouth Star Miles Austin Makes Dallas Cowboys Roster; RMU’s Fraley Traded to Cleveland Browns Former Monmouth wide receiver and NEC All-Star Miles Austin is a member of the 2006 Dallas Cowboys after making the final cut, Cowboys officials announced on Saturday. The 6-3 wideout, signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent a few days after the April 2006 Draft and had an outside shot of making the 53-man roster. But Monmouth’s all-time record holder in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches put his talents on display in a game against the New Orleans Saints on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. After making two special teams tackles, Austin hauled in a 48-yard touchdown reception from Cowboy’s quarterback Tony Romo to seal Dallas’ 30-7 victory. Austin becomes the first Monmouth University player to make an NFL 53-man roster. Former Hawk wideout Will Holder signed on with the Oakland Raiders after a four-year successful Arena Football League run, but was released after training camp. Two other former NEC players compete professionally - Hank Fraley (Robert Morris), a center who was traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Cleveland Browns over the weekend, and Kurt Campbell (Albany), a cornerback on the Green Bay Packers who is currently on injured reserve.

Central Connecticut State (2-0, 0-0 NEC) • The Blue Devils are now 2-0 for the first time since the 1980 season after a stunning, 17-13 win, over No. 13 Georgia Southern on Saturday night at Statesboro, GA. The home opener loss was the first for the six-time national champions since the beginning of the 1996 season. CCSU has not started a season 3-0 since the beginning of the 1973 season ... Central Connecticut is now 17-6 since the beginning of the 2004 season with a pair of wins over perennial I-AA playoff contenders Colgate and Georgia Southern ... The Blue Devils renew an old rivalry on Friday night at New Haven, CT when they face Southern Connecticut at 7:00 pm ... The two teams have met 50 times in the past but have not met since the 1999 season. The Blue Devils have lost only one game in the state of Connecticut since the 2003 season ... On Saturday night, the Blue Devils held Georgia Southern scoreless in the second half en route to the four-point win, perhaps the biggest win in school and program history ... GSU had six drives in the second half which resulted in four punts, one fumble and one turnover on downs ... Only one GSU drive in the second half went for more than 14 yards and lasted longer than six plays. The Blue Devils trailed for only 2:13 in the entire game ... Senior running back Justise Hairston (New Britain, CT/New Britain/Rutgers) accounted for 155 all-purpose including 106 on the ground, his first 100 yard game in a CCSU uniform and the third time in his career. Sophomore quarterback Aubrey Norris (Staten Island, NY/Hargrave Military Academy (VA)) accounted for the two touchdowns for the Blue Devils on Saturday night running for one and passing for another. Norris now has nine passing touchdowns and only one interception in his career. Freshman kicker Ryan Heeney (Milford, NH/Milford) kicked his first career field goal in the win, a 25-yarder in the first quarter ... The Blue Devils forced three turnovers and did not turn the ball over once in the victory. Junior linebacker Chris Stimmel (Baltimore, MD/Cardinal Gibbons) had a team-high 12 tackles including one for a loss and his first career interception. Sophomore defensive end Ernie Greywacz (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) had 10 tackles and a pass break-up in the victory, he leads the team with 19 tackles this season. Senior Nigel Monge (Roxbury, MA/Catholic Memorial) had nine tackles from his linebacker position. The Blue Devils rushed for 204 yards giving them 492 rushing yards in the first two games. Monmouth (2-0, 0-0 NEC) • The Hawks were 5-of-6 in red zone scoring against Morgan State, finishing the game with a 26-9 win ... Senior wide receiver Adam San Miguel (North Bergen, NJ/Saint Peter’s Prep) needs just 16 yards for 1,000 career yards, but his 83 receptions is fifth all-time among MU pass catchers ... MU's first three possessions on Saturday each lasted nine plays, getting the Hawks in scoring position all-three times ... The first time they managed a field goal, the second they missed a field goal and the third time they scored a touchdown. The three drives totaled over 11 minutes of game time ... Brian Boland (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) is 135 yards away from becoming Monmouth's all-time leader in total offensive yards ... Boland has a streak of four-straight games with a touchdown pass going, he has also thrown a TD in the last 11 out of 12 games, dating back to the start of the 2005 season ... Boland finished on 14-22 (64 percent) passing with 1 touchdown and 184 yards and no interceptions in last week's win. He hit eight different receivers in the game against Morgan State. Boland also scrambled for a seven-yard touchdown run, to give the Hawks a 22-3 lead ... Anthony Addonizio (Holmdel, NJ/Holmdel) led all tacklers with seven total tackles on the day, including six solo stops and two assisted stops. Addonizio had one sack in the game, tossing the MSU quarterback for a six yard loss. He also had a pass breakup in the game. Addonizio and the rest of the Hawk defense held the Bears to 151 yards of total offense, including 73 yards in the air, holding their opponent to under 100 yards passing for the second straight week. The senior leads the team in passes defended (with 2) and is third on the team in tackles with nine total. The Hawks did not punt against Morgan State until the 4:11 mark of the third quarter ... Monmouth held an outstanding advantage in field position, starting their drives at their own 47 on average, compared to Morgan State's average of their own 27 yard line ... MU's defense is allowing just 68.5 yards per game passing which is ninth among all Division I teams ... The Hawks lead the NEC in six different team statistical categories, including passing defense and turnover margin ... Senior Michael McClelland's (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) first (and only) reception of the season so far was a 19 yard touchdown grab ... The Hawks won their home opener for the fourth consecutive season ... Monmouth is now 9-5 all-time in home openers ... The Hawks are 39-24 (.619) at Kessler Field all-time ... Monmouth out-gained Morgan State 296-151 in Saturday's win, and has out-gained their opponents 582-405 in 2006. Robert Morris (0-2, 0-0 NEC) • Robert Morris fell to 0-2 in for just the third time in school history with a 27-7 loss against Duquesne in its 2006 home opener ... The defeat is just the second for RMU in home openers, dropping the club to 11-2 all-time, while the series with Duquesne is now tied 4-4 ... Turnovers proved costly for the Colonials against the Dukes, as the club committed four, including two fumbles deep in Duquesne territory and an interception by sophomore quarterback Erik Cwalinski (Jacobsburg, OH/Shadyside) that was returned 96 yards for a touchdown by Aaron Strader ... Cwalinski finished 9-for-22 for 109 yards, a touchdown and two picks ... Junior Mario Hines (Ecorse, MI/Ecorse) racked up 206 all-purpose yards against the Dukes, compiling 165 yards on five kickoff returns, three receptions for 33 yards and four yards on three punt returns ... Hines is the sixth different Colonial in school history to eclipse 200 all-purpose yards in a contest and he is averaging 157.5 all-purpose yards in his first two games ... Freshman running back Brian Harden (Sunrise, FL/Stranahan) averaged 9.1 yards per carry in his second career start, gaining 82 yards on nine carries ... Harden's numbers were bolstered by a 41-yard run in third quarter ... Junior Alvin Hill (New Kensington, PA/Plum) finished with three catches for 40 yards and a touchdown to lead the RMU receiving corps ... Senior defensive lineman Matt Brunck (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel) pace the Robert Morris defense with nine tackles, including three for losses that totaled 11 yards and a sack ... Junior linebacker Chad Wengert (Kempton, PA/Kutztown) and senior defensive lineman Colyn Haugh (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) each finished with seven takedowns against the Dukes ... Robert Morris has done a good job of stopping the run in its first two games, yielding just 128.5 yards per game on the ground ... RMU's rushing defense is even better through the first three quarters, holding its first two opponents to an average 65.5 yards on the ground ... The Colonials are allowing opponents to average 71.5 yards rushing in the fourth quarter ... Robert Morris takes to the road for a 1 p.m. non-conference tilt at Pioneer League foe Butler Saturday, Sept. 16, in its next game. Sacred Heart (0-2, 0-0 NEC) • Sacred Heart managed just 26 yards on the ground on 14 carries in the 28-19 loss at Marist. The Pioneers fell behind 28-7 at the start of the third quarter, before finally getting the offense rolling....It was the second straight loss for the Pioneers against the Red Foxes. Marist now leads the all-time series, 3-2....Sophomore Kyle Smith (Pawcatuck, CT/St. Thomas) caught a career-high four passes for 94 yards in the game....Senior QB Tyler Arciaga (Bonita, CA) completed 28 of 41 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown. The 28 completions tied a SHU game record. Arciaga tied the mark set by Justin Holtfreter in 2000 when he completed 28 against Stony Brook.... Arciaga also registered his first career rushing TD, going in from seven yards out in the fourth quarter for the final SHU score.... Through the first two games Arciaga has completed an impressive 66.7 percent of his passes (45-68). He set the SHU school record for completion percentage last season by connecting on 57 percent of his throws.....Arciaga (2,577) moved into second place all-time in passing yards behind Holtfreter (4,441)....Senior linebacker Rolando Garcia (Bronx, NY/Avon Old Farms (CT)) had a career-high 14 tackles against Marist (5 solo) and leads the Puoneers with 25 stops in the first two games....Sophomore linebacker Steve Young (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) registered a career-high seven tackles, as did sophomore corner Jeff Hodges (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Royal Palm) with eight stops....Junior receiver Corey Bundy (Selden, NY/Newfield), who led the Pioneers with 8 TD receptions a year ago, had his first of the 2006 season when Arciaga hit him from 35 yards out with 2:20 left in the third quarter. Saint Francis (PA) (1-1, 0-0 NEC) • Saint Francis played its first-ever game against a Division I-AA full scholarship team against Delaware State this past weekend; Senior running back Todd Harris (Duquesne, PA/Duquesne) became the school's all-time leading rusher with 79 yards on 28 carries. He needed 44 yards coming into the ballgame to break the record, formerly held by Michael Hall (2000-03). Harris has 492 (second in school history) rushing attempts for 2,366 yards during his standout career; The Red Flash gained 416 yards of total offense, including 218 on the ground, and held the ball for 37 minutes, 45 seconds against the Hornets; SFU ran 67 plays to just 40 for Delaware State; The Red Flash were 2-of-2, with 2 touchdowns, inside the red zone against DSU, and are 7-of-7 on the season, with 6 touchdowns; Redshirt freshman quarterback George Little (Duquesne, PA/Duquesne) was 2-of-2 on his first two pass attempts of his career for 38 yards and a 32-yard touchdown pass; Senior wide receiver Michael Caputo (Bethel Park, PA / Seton LaSalle) pulled in 6 catches for 108 yards and a touchdown. It was Caputo's 25th career total touchdown, his 24th career receiving touchdown and his 154th career point, setting the Saint Francis all-time records in all three categories on the same play; Caputo and senior WR Luke Palko (Imperial, PA/West Allegheny) have combined for 405 career receptions, 15 shy of the NCAA Division I-AA record of 420 receptions by two receivers on the same team; Senior QB Anthony Doria recorded his 600th career completion in the game; Harris went over 3,000 career all-purpose yards ... Junior Anthony Richards (Parlin, NJ/Cardinal McCray) piled up 183 all-purpose yards against Division I-AA full scholarship foe Delaware State, gaining 105 yards on the ground on just nine carries. He sprinted for a 79-yard touchdown from scrimmage, which goes in the books as the second longest touchdown run from scrimmage in school history, just two yards shy of the record. He averaged 11.7 yards on his 9 carries. Richards also returned two kickoffs for a total of 78 yards, including a long run of 42 yards. ... Notes Junior Adam Sciulli (Pittsburgh, PA/Central Catholic) made all four of his PAT attempts to extend his school-record streak to 61-for-61. He is now 9-for-9 on PAT attempts in two games this season, and made his only field goal attempt during Week 1 ... Notes Freshman Jared Colmer (Duncansville, PA/Hollidaysburg) gained 77 yards on 4 kickoff returns, including a run back of 21 yards to help put the Red Flash in good field position against Delaware State. Stony Brook (0-1, 0-0 NEC) • Stony Brook dropped a 7-0 decision to Georgetown on Saturday at Washington, D.C. ... The Seawolves outgained the Hoyas 304-204 but were undone by nine penalties that set them back 89 yards ... Richie Richards (St. Albans, NY/Bayside) had 10 tackles and Chris Merkle (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) totaled eight for a defense that limited Georgetown to 86 yards rushing ... Stony Brook’s defense has allowed only 154 yards rushing in two games ... Freshman Tyler Santucci (New Kensington, PA/Valley had four tackles, a fumble recovery and broke up two passes ... Linebacker Milo Otis (Los Angeles, CA/LA Southwest JC) picked off his first pass in a Seawolf uniform in the second half ... Chris Tomasky (Ronkonkoma, NY/Nassau CC) had eight stops ... Adam Soivilien (Dorchester, MA/Worchester Academy) registered a sack ... Wideout Dwayne Eley (Bowie, MD/Gonzaga) had his best performance in a Seawolf uniform with seven catches for 81 yards ... Freshman Conte Cuttino (Uniondale, NY/Uniondale) led the Seawolves with 45 rushing yards ... Quarterback Andrew Garrett (Milford, NJ/Hofstra) came on in relief of Josh Dudash (Beachwood, NJ/Toms River) and completed 12 of 21 passes for 125 yards ... The Seawolves take on nationally-ranked New Hampshire next Saturday, Sept. 16. Wagner (1-0, 0-0 NEC) • Wagner defeated Iona 7-3 on Homecoming at Wagner Stadium to start the season out 2-0 for the fifth straight year. The Seahawks have now defeated Iona 10 straight times and own a 16-1 all-time record vs the Gaels ... Senior wide receiver Chris Turner (Syracuse, NY/Henninger) scored the games lone touchdown, hauling in a nine yard fade pass in the corner of the endzone from sophomore quarterback Matt Abbey (La Canada, CA/St. Francis) ... Turner has now caught at least one touchdown pass in six straight games dating back to last season and has 10 TD catches during the stretch. He was awarded the James Robb Memorial Trophy for Wagner's outstanding offensive player on homecoming. Winning the Lt. Nick Lia award for Wagner's outstanding defensive player on homecoming was junior captain Bryan Brand (Placerville, CA/Santa Barbara CC). Brand made a game high 10 stops (5 solo) with 2 tackles for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble. The story of the game for Wagner was the punting of junior Piotr Czech (Keyport, NJ/Keyport). Czech punted eight times for a 37.0 average, but downed six inside the 20-yard line as Wagner was able to control field position. Through the first two games of the year the Wagner defense is allowing just 204 yards per game and 74.0 yard on the ground. The Seahawks return to action next Saturday at Marist. |
