  2005-06 Valley National Bank Scholar-Athletes


Through its partnership with Valley National Bank, the Northeast Conference for the second straight season is recognizing outstanding scholar-athletes. One Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete award winner will be chosen from each participating school during NEC-televised basketball games throughout the 2005-06 season. At the conclusion of the season, a donation in honor of each institution’s award winners and on behalf of Valley National Bank will be presented to every NEC school for use in their general scholarship funds.

In addition, Valley is sponsoring the "Valley National Bank Academic Awards" program, which includes the Valley National Bank Student-Athlete of the Year, the Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards (presented to one winner in each of the conference’s 21 sports) and the Valley National Bank NEC Honor Roll (comprised of student-athletes who have earned a minimum grade point average of 3.2 or higher).

Pape, the 2006 NEC Player of the Year, has been named all-conference in each of her three years, including two first team nods. Only a junior, Pape currently sits third on the SHU all-time scoring list with 1,384 points. An ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Second Team selection, Page carries a 3.25 grade point average with a major in business. 

Jaime Crowley • Central Connecticut State • Swimming

March 5, 2006

A two-time all-NEC selection, Crowley became the first swimmer in CCSU history to swim in back-to-back NCAA Championships. In her career, the Plainville, CT native has captured five NEC individual swimming crowns, including the 50 free and 100 breast titles this season. With a major in physical education, Crowley has compiled a 3.20 grade point average.

Shenay Freeman • Fairleigh Dickinson • Basketball

March 5, 2006

Freeman, a sophomore, finished the season fourth in the team in scoring (8.1 ppg) and second on the circuit in steals (58). From the guard position, Freeman started all 28 games in which she played for the Knights. She posted a career-high in points (21) against St. Francis (PA) and a career-high in steals (5) against Miami. Freeman is a psychology major that maintains a 3.857 grade point average.

Derek Coleman • Robert Morris • Basketball

March 5, 2006

A junior point guard, Coleman finished the 2005-06 season with 137 assists, which put him in a tie for eighth place on the RMU single season record list. Coleman led the NEC against league opponents with a 45.5 three-point field goal shooting percentage. A management major, Coleman posesses a 3.09 grade point average.

Moran Stern • St. Francis (NY) • Water Polo

Stern is the captain of the St. Francis (NY) men's water polo team that reached the NCAA Final Four this season. A native of Israel, he is also the president of the St. Francis (NY) Student-Athlete Advisory Board. A US Water Polo Association Academic All-American, Stern boasts a perfect 4.00 grade point average as a triple major in management, communication arts and philosophy.

Aisha Thomas • Long Island • Track & Field

Thomas captured three individual crowns at the 2006 NEC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship en route to being named the Most Valuable Performer and the Outstanding Track Performer. The speedy sophomore posted wins in the 200 and 400 meter dashes as well as establishing a new meet record in the 60m dash with a time of 7.65s. An education major, Thomas maintains a 3.78 grade point average.

Lindsey Snyder • CCSU • Swimming

February 25, 2006

 Snyder is the two-time defending NEC women's swimming champion in the 200 backstroke and has anchored CCSU's gold medal winning 200 freestyle relay team in each of the last two conference championship events.  After helping lead the Blue Devils to a runner-up finish in the 2006 NEC meet, she went on to capture the 200 backstroke at the ECAC Championships in late February.  Snyder is an Elemenatry Education major.

 An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II First Team honoree, Carlsen anchored a St. Francis (PA) defensive unit that surrendered the second fewest goals in the NEC last season as the Red Flash appeared in the NEC Tournament for the first time since 2000.  She was a second team all-Conference seletion who tied for seventh in the league with six assists.  A History/Pre-Law major, Carlsen carries a 3.76 grade point average.

Christy Sykora • Wagner • Softball

 Sykora was selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American District I team last spring and is a two-time NEC Academic Honor Roll member.  She was named first team all-NEC last season after ranking second in the league with 39 runs scored while hitting .372.  Sykora, who tied an NEC Tournament single-game record last spring with five RBI, capped her year by earning first team NFCA All-Mid Atlantic Region accolades. Sykora is an English major.

With 1,232 career points, Wirth is currently seventh all-time on the LIU scoring chart. This season, she paces the Blackbirds in points per game (12.8), while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and nearly 44 percent from three-point range. The senior paces the league and is eight in the country in three-pointers made per game (3.0). A native of Hastings, MN, Wirth has 276 career treys, just 11 shy of the all-time Blackbird lead. She holds a 3.79 grade point average with a major in media arts.

Suzanne Montecalvo • Robert Morris • Track & Field

Montecalvo is a four-year letterwinner in track and field for the Colonials. The senior sprinter/jumper recently finished fourth at the 2006 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championship in the triple jump with a mark of 36' 1.50". She also posted a season-best leap of 17' 2.75" in the long jump at West Virginia on December 3. With a major in communications, Montecalvo maintains a 3.89 grade point average.

Hein, a senior guard, currently paces the NEC with a 1.45 assist-to-turnover ratio. She also leads the Red Flash in minutes, field goals made, three-pointers, assists and steals. Hein is a career 41.1 percent three-point shooter, including a school-record 48.7 clip last season. In November, Hein was named to the All-Tournament team at the Women's Sports Foundation Challenge in Oregon. The Academic All-District Two selection has a 3.969 grade point average with a major in accounting.

Chris Kenny • Monmouth • Basketball

Kenny currently ranks 15th on Monmouth's Division I scoring list with 943 points and sixth on the Hawks' all-time three-point field goal list with 180. The senior guard is tied for the team lead with 32 steals this season. An education major, Kenny has a 3.41 overall grade point average.

Jocelyn Davis • Fairleigh Dickinson • Bowling

In three years as an undergraduate at FDU, Davis posted a 3.799 grade point average with a degree in math. In her first semester as a graduate student, Davis owns a 4.00 GPA. The former president of FDU's SAAC, currently works with them as the main contact for fundraising and community outreach. In five months, Davis was able to coordinate an effort of over $2,500 in donation to Sloan Kettering in honor of a baseball player's mother.

Dwyer was named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District first team selection for the second consecutive year. The Ireland native now ranks 7th on the all-time MU scoring chart with 1,168 career points. Dwyer became the 13th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. She joins assistant coach Jewonda Bright as the only two players in MU history to net 1,000 career points in just three seasons. A business management major, Dwyer holds a 3.5 overall grade point average.

Dita Krumberga • Mount St. Mary's • Basketball

Krumberga, who hails from Lativa, ranks third on the Mount squad in scoring with 10.6 points per game and second on the team with 6.3 rebounds per game. The junior guard posted a career-high 28 points, including 10 in the extra session, in an 84-75 win over William & Mary on December 2. Krumberga became the third Mount player this season to cross the 500 point mark. She holds a 3.28 overall grade point average with a major in international business.

Suckow is currently leading the Knights with 13.4 points per game. The senior guard has tallied a team-high 80 assists and has made a team-high 32 three-pointers this season. An NEC Player of the Week selection on February 13, Suckow owns a 3.753 grade point average with a major in criminal justice.

Jay Monti • Sacred Heart • Baseball

Monti was named the 2005 NEC Pitcher of the Year following a stellar sophomore season. The Marlboro, NY native posted an 8-5 record and a 2.20 ERA. He tallied nine complete games, four shutouts and walked just ten batters in 82 innings, while fanning 56 opponents. An accounting major, Monti holds a 3.21 overall grade point average.

A defensive lineman on the Colonials football team, Gensler finished the 2005 season ranked fifth on the squad in tackles (60), including posting a career high 11 tackles against NEC foe Central Connecticut on October 15. The junior was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Second Team this season. He holds a 3.93 overall grade point average with a major in manufacturing engineering.

Tim Binkoski • Quinnipiac • Baseball

Binkoski concluded the 2005 season by being selected to the all-NEC first-team as an outfielder. He led the NEC in doubles (18), was second in total bases (98) and ranked in the top ten in batting average, hits and slugging percentage. He had 19 multiple-hit games, including four three-hit efforts. Against Wagner, Binkoski drove in three runs with a game-winning bases-clearing double. He also posted a career-high four RBI against UMass on April 26. A history major, Binkoski holds a 3.415 grade point average.

Ashley Del Greco • Sacred Heart • Field Hockey

The Pioneers finished the 2005 season with their first NEC field hockey title, behind the play of Del Greco in the cage. The tournament MVP allowed just one goal in two tournament games. Del Greco finished the season with a 1.96 goals against average and was ranked fourth nationally in save percentage with a .815 mark and seventh in the nation in saves collecting 163. A three-time NEC Fall Academic Honor Roll selection, she holds a 3.43 grade point average in social sciences and history.

Mandy Jenkins • Mount St. Mary's • Track & Field

Jenkins is the reigning NEC Indoor and Outdoor Champion in the pole vault. In addition, she advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Track East Regionals in the pole vault in each of the last two seasons. At the conclusion of the 2005 season, Jenkins was named to the ESPN the Magazine All-District All-Academic Team. A double major in biochemistry and chemistry, Jenkins boasts a 3.93 grade point average.

Tyler Azzarelli • Monmouth • Basketball

Azzarelli is one of only six Monmouth players to ever start 100 games. He also ranks in the top six on Monmouth's career assists and steals list. Earlier this season in a 80-68 win over Southern Illinois at the Great Alaska Shootout, Azzarelli was named the Carrs/Safeway Player of the Game for his performance. A 2005 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II selection, he holds a 3.91 grade point average in business marketing.

Tiffany Alford • Wagner • Track & Field

A member of both the indoor and outdoor track and field teams, Alford placed first in the high jump earlier this season at the Bucknell Heptagonal with a jump of 1.65 meters. At the 2005 NEC indoor championship Alford placed second in the high jump (1.64m) to go along with a fourth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (9.54s). The four-time NEC Academic Honor Roll selection majoring in history had a 4.0 grade point average last semester to complement her overall GPA of 3.9.

Ryan Sheehan • St. Francis (PA) • Cross Country

 Sheehan concluded his career as a five-time Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winner in cross country and track and the first runner in league history to win three NEC Cross Country individual championships.  A four-time all-NEC cross country performer and the 2001 NEC Freshman of the Year, Sheehan helped lead the Red Flash to three conference titles over the course of his career and was a two-time NCAA qualifier. A 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, Sheehan majors in Biology and maintains a 3.44 grade point average.

Mark Klabnik • Robert Morris • Soccer

 A key defender on the Colonials, Klabnik started every game and recorded six assists as Robert Morris captured its first NEC men's soccer championship since 1994 with a 3-2 overtime win over Monmouth back in November.  Off the field, the junior is a two-time member of the NEC Academic Honor Roll.  A Manufacturing Engineering major, Klabnik has posted a 3.79 grade point average at Robert Morris, including a perfect 4.0 last fall.

Katie Gwyther • Quinnipiac • Cross Country

In November, Gwyther became the first harrier in NEC history to earn All-America status after finishing 12th out of 253 competitors at the NCAA Championships in Terra Haute, IN. Just three weeks earlier, she captured her second straight NEC individual crown with a virtuoso performance, beating the field by 1:32 in a course record time of 18:01 as the Bobcats won their first conference title. A three-time NEC Athlete of the Week this past fall, Gwyther carries a 3.43 grade point average majoring in Health Sciences.

Lizelle Jackson • Long Island • Volleyball

Jackson was selected as the 2005 NEC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year after leading the Blackbirds to a 26-14 overall mark and their second straight league crown.  She also served as the catalyst as Long Island became the first volleyball team in conference history to win an NCAA Tournament match when the Blackbirds defeated Cornell in a first round matchup.  Jackson, a senior, is a Media Arts major with a 3.39 grade point average.

Katja Bavendam • St. Francis (NY) • Basketball

The third-tallest women’s player in NCAA Division I at 6’7”, Bavendam has amassed three double-doubles in 2005-06.  With 35 blocks, she is on pace to break the St. Francis (NY) single-season school record of 48.  Bavendam established a career-high with seven rejections against Seton Hall on November 20, 2005.  The sophomore is pursuing Information Technology as a major and has compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Matt Born • Fairleigh Dickinson • Baseball

 Born ranked second on the Knights last season with a .315 average.  He started 29 games, and registered a .472 slugging percentage and .426 on-base percentage.  As the conclusion of the season, Born was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II University Division Baseball Team.  The senior majors in Mechanical Engineering Technology and maintains a 3.94 grade point average.

The 2005 Valley National Bank Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's soccer, Ferra set a school record with ten shutouts in 2005 as the Blue Devils captured their fourth consecutive NEC championship.  Named the 2005 NEC Defensive Player of the Year, she was also selected by ESPN The Magazine as an Academic All-District first team performer and was tabbed a New England Intercollegiate Women’s Soccer Association first team all-star.  A Marketing major, Ferra carries a 3.60 grade point average.

Gottesman has received a host of athletic and academic awards over the course of his career, the most recent being his addition to the 2005 NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America second team.  He was also honored on the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II first team and as an All-NEC second team pick.  Gottesman, who started 18 games for the Knights and finished with five points this past season, is a Finance major with a 3.88 grade point average.

Luke Palko • St. Francis (PA) • Football

Palko was recently named a 2005 ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American after completing a junior year that saw his earn second team all-NEC status.  He finished the season second in the conference with 85 receptions and enters his senior campaign as the career receptions leader in both Red Flash and NEC history with 209.  The President of the St. Francis (PA) Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Palko is an Accounting major with a 3.73 grade point average.

Katie Duffy • Sacred Heart • Cross Country

 Duffy finished fourth at the 2005 NEC Women's Cross Country Championships in October, a performance that helped boost Sacred Heart to its first-ever league title.  A two-time all-NEC honoree, she went on to earn all-East honors at the 2005 ECAC Championships following a 22nd place finish.  Duffy, a junior, is an NEC Honor Roll student in both cross country and track and field and carries a 3.24 grade point average as a Psychology major.

Farod Muhammad • CCSU • Football

December 9, 2005

A first team all-NEC defensive back in 2005, Muhammad anchored a defensive backfield that produced 15 interceptions in 11 games, helping the Blue Devils lead the league in turnover margin.  He tied for fourth on the team with 64 tackles and tied for third in the conference with three interceptions as CCSU won its second straight NEC championship.  Muhammad, a junior, majors in Electronics Technology. 

Gergerly Fabian • St. Francis (NY) • Water Polo

December 9, 2005

 Fabian helped lead the Terriers to their first-ever NCAA Water Polo Final Four appearance earlier this month.  An All-American as a sophomore and a junior, Fabian scored 34 goals and added 13 assists for St. Francis, which finished the year with a 20-10 mark and reached the Final Four by capturing captured the 2005 Eastern Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) title in November.  He is a Communications major who maintains a 3.67 grade point average.

Jackie McCormick • Long Island • Soccer

 A first team all-NEC selection each of the last two years and a second team pick as a sophomore, McCormick ended her career as the Blackbirds' all-time leader in assists (15) and ranks second in goals (20) and points (55).  She helped lead Long Island to the conference finals this past season following a second place regular season finish.  A member of LIU's Honor's Program, she is an English major with a 3.61 grade point average.
