  CCSU WBB Team Preview

Central Connecticut State

2006-07 Overall Record: 6-23
2006-07 NEC Record/Finish: 4-14/T-9th
2006-07 NEC Tournament Result: DNQ

Central Connecticut State turned to an old friend to help take a struggling program in a new direction. New head coach Beryl Piper returns to her alma mater, hoping to return Central Connecticut State to the successes she experienced during her playing days there. As a senior co-captain, Piper led the 1985-86 team to a school-record 24 wins en route to her eventual induction into the CCSU Hall of Fame. After amassing 289 victories during an extremely successful head coaching stint at New Britain High School, she will now try to turn around a program that has not finished higher than ninth in the NEC standings in any the past five seasons. She does have a talented, young guard to build around in sophomore P.J. Wade (Hardy, VA/Franklin County). An NEC All-Rookie Team selection, Wade averaged 6.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game and made 10 starts as a freshman. Piper’s other two top returnees are guards as well, which may explain why four of the six members of her first recruiting class are forwards.
