  LIU WBB Team Preview

Long Island

2006-07 Overall Record: 22-9
2006-07 NEC Record/Finish: 15-3/T-1st
2006-07 NEC Tournament Result: Lost in quarterfinal, 61-51, to St. Francis (NY)

The top-seeded team in last season’s NEC Tournament, Long Island returns four starters in hopes of avoiding the early round upset they encountered in March.  Reigning NEC Player of the Year sophomore Valerie Nainima (Suva, Fiji/St. Joseph’s Secondary) and senior Mikaelar Whippy (Suva, Fiji/Church College of New Zealand) comprise the Blackbirds’ extremely productive all-Fiji backcourt.   The two helped their native land of Fiji capture Gold at this past summer’s South Pacific Games, but now the focus shifts to the NEC where the two helped LIU to a 15-3 record and a share of last year’s regular season crown.  Nainima was responsible for one of the best rookie campaigns in league history, using her quickness off the dribble and great shooting ability to score 17.8 points per game.  She led the NEC in three-point field goal percentage (43.6) and was third in free-throw percentage (84.7).  Whippy added 12.7 points per game and was smart with the ball as evidenced by her 114 assists and the league’s second-best  assist-turnover ratio (1.65).   Senior Sara Oblak (Skofja Loka, Slovenia/Univ. of Ljubljana) provides veteran head coach Stephanie Gaitley with scoring ability down low.  The  6-2 forward averaged 9.0 points per game last year.
