MSM WBB Team Preview
Bryan Whitten takes over a program that has been taking gradual steps toward regaining the status that the eight-time NEC Regular Season champion Mountaineers once held. There are still more benchmarks to meet, but the Mount increased its win total for the third consecutive season last year. MSM’s 10-8 conference record was its first winning tally in five years. Whitten, who amassed 12 years of head coaching experience at Division III Kings College before his most recent assistant coaching stint at Virgina Commonwealth, must now find a way to continue the Mount’s restoration. The task would have been easier if all-NEC first team selection Dita Krumberg had another year to play. The small forward averaged 17.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during her senior campaign. Those numbers will be missed, but Whitten has an experienced, talented backcourt that is a model for strong defense and consistency. Two-time NEC Defensive Player of the Year senior Tiffany Green (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) has started 80 games in three seasons and can produce on the offensive end as well. In 28 starts last season, Green posted averages of 10.5 ppg, 9.2 rpg, and 3.6 apg. Junior guard Brianna Gauthier (Severna Park, MD/St. Mary’s), who has 50 career starts under her belt, tallied 9.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, and 3.2 apg, while shooting 78 percent from the line last year. |
