SFNY WBB Team Preview
St. Francis (NY) The Terriers and head coach Brenda Milano have to be optimistic about the new season after last year’s finish. St. Francis (NY) ended a seven-year NEC Tournament drought by grabbing the eight and final spot, but did not stop there. SFNY upset top-seeded LIU by 10 points to move into the semifinal. With the top three scorers returning, there may be more big wins to come. Senior guards Tiffany Hill (Orange, NJ/Orange) and Kara Ayers (Galloway, NJ/Absegami) are a dangerous backcourt duo having averaged 14.6 ppg and 11.8 ppg, respectively, last year. Making the Terriers even more difficult to defend is the league’s tallest player 6-8 center Katja Bavendam (Hamburg, Germany/Osterholz-Scharmbeck). An all-NEC selection, Bavendam nearly averaged a double-double with 14.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She was also a force on the defensive end, effectively utilizing her size to block a league-best 98 shots (3.16/gm), which ranked her amongst the nation’s top ten shot-blockers. It should not be a surprise to see that block total increase this season, especially with one of the WNBA’s all-time blocks leaders Sue Wicks on Milano’s staff. |
