SHU WBB Team Preview
Sacred Heart
2006-07 Overall Record: 22-10 2006-07 NEC Record/Finish: 15-3/T-1st 2006-07 NEC Tournament Result: Lost in final, 68-66, to Robert Morris
Sacred Heart’s second half comeback in last year’s NEC title game came up two points too short as the Pioneers were unable to snatch their second straight league championship. Veteran head coach Ed Swanson is back for his 18th season on the SHU sidelines, but he will undoubtedly miss all-NEC first teamer and top scorer Amanda Pape (19.4 ppg and 7.3 rpg). Still, the Pioneers have enough to possibly recapture the NEC crown. Junior center Kaitlin Sowinski (Hopkinton, RI/Tabor Academy) provides an experienced presence down-low, having made 30 starts last year. The 6-4 center contributed 11.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game, but will have a tougher task this year in trying to account for the loss of forward Jasmine Walker (12.4 ppg and 10.4 rpg). Senior guard Lisa Moray (Hopewell Junction, NY/Roy C. Ketcham) had the best assist-turnover ratio (2.08) in the NEC, while tallying 7.7 points per game in 31 minutes of action. The Pioneers must also try to rekindle the defensive spark they had last year, holding teams to under 60 points per outing and allowing a conference-best 37.4 field-goal percentage against.
