All three of the Blackbirds who comprised LIU’s 1-2-3 finish in 60m hurdles at last year’s NEC Indoor Championships have graduated, but the Brooklyn-based school may very well produce the champion in that event for the fifth consecutive year. First-year Blackbird Shanice Grant (8.a60) is the current league leader in the 60m hurdles. In her final tuneup for the NEC Indoor Championships, Grant ran the race in 8.65s at the NYC Armory Collegiate Invitational. The Jamaican-born hurdler edged out UConn’s Chantal Scott to win her heat, which also contained competitors Texas A&M, Temple and Mississippi State. Grant is the second LIU freshman to capture the NEC Rookie of the Week award this season. Ja’Mesha Richard, who ranks second to Grant amongst NEC leaders in the 60m hurdles, claimed the honor on Jan. 15.
