Wagner’s Andrea Lazzari Named NEC Player of the Year

Wagner first baseman Andrea Lazzari (Reno, NV/Wooster) earned NEC Player of the Year honors, while Long Island’s Blaire Porter (Redmond, WA/Redmond) received NEC Pitcher of the Year accolades. Robert Morris’ Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, DE/St. Marks) garnered NEC Rookie of the Year honors, while Saint Francis’ (PA) Sabrina Lane was chosen by her peers as the NEC Coach of the Year. The awards were presented at a banquet on the eve of the 2008 NEC Softball Tournament, set to begin on Friday, May 9 at Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. The four-team, double-elimination tournament will be contested over two days, with the championship game slated to begin on Saturday at 12:30 pm.

Northeast Conference Softball Tournament Preview

The 2008 Northeast Conference Softball Tournament will begin on Friday, May 9 at LIU Field on the campus of Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY. The double-elimination tournament begins Friday, May 9 when top-seeded Long Island squares off with #4 Wagner at 10:00 am, followed by a match-up between #2 Robert Morris and #3 Saint Francis (PA) at 12:30 pm. The championship game is scheduled for Saturday, May 10 with the rain date set for Sunday, May 11. The winner of the NEC Championship will receive the league’s automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Sacred Heart Men's Golf Headed To NCAA Central Regional

The Sacred Heart men's golf team will be one of 27 teams competiting at the NCAA Central Regional hosted by Ohio State, May 15th through 17th as the Pioneers make their first-ever NCAA tournament apperance. The Pioneers are seeded 27th in the region and will take part in the 54-hole tournament being held at the Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. Sacred Heart earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid by virtue of winning the Northeast Conference Championship over the weekend at the Hershey Links in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The Pioneers won the three-day event by firing a record-setting 54-hole total of 870 (+6). SHU bested the 11 team field winning the three-day tournament by 23 strokes over second place finisher Long Island (+29).
