December 16, 2003

Somerset, NJ -- One student-athlete apiece from Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Monmouth, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (PA) and Albany comprise the 2003 Northeast Conference Fall Scholar-Athlete award winners. In addition to the scholar-athletes, the NEC also announced its fall academic honor roll, consisting of 317 student-athletes. All scholar-athlete award winners must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 and have participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team.

St. Francis (PA) junior Ryan Sheehan (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) earns scholar-athlete honors in men’s cross country for the second consecutive season. Sheehan won his second straight NEC individual championship last month - crossing the tape in 25:51.2 - to boost the Red Flash to their fifth consecutive league crown. His subsequent fifth place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships qualified him for the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. Sheehan placed 81st out of 254 runners at nationals, clocking in at 30:45.2. A St. Francis (PA) and NEC honor roll recipient, Sheehan maintains a 3.25 grade point average majoring in Biology.

Sacred Heart senior Katherine Wrinkle (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) collects her second straight NEC scholar-athlete award for women’s cross country. She captured her first NEC individual championship at the league meet last month, covering the 5K race in 18:50.3 to outdistance the competition by more than 36 seconds. Wrinkle finished fourth, third, second and first, chronologically, in her four NEC championship races, and earned all-NEC honors each season. In 2003, she compiled five top-five finishes and became the first-ever Sacred Heart runner to earn all-New England honors following a 12th place finish at the prestigious regional meet. It also marked the best finish by an NEC runner in the history of the event. A four-time NEC Athlete of the Week this past season, Wrinkle carries a 3.65 grade point average majoring in Psychology.

Monmouth senior midfielder Kristen Hulmes (Montville, NJ/Montville Township) takes home scholar-athlete honors for field hockey. Hulmes was tabbed to the all-NEC first team after leading Monmouth in goals (four) and points (11). She ranked eighth in the conference in goals and 11th in scoring. The Hawks’ team captain, Hulmes has posted a 3.73 grade point average as an Art major.

Albany senior linebacker Victor Camacho (New York, NY/Mount St. Michael Academy) is the winner of the NEC scholar-athlete award for football. Camacho was the ringleader for an Albany defense that ranked fifth in I-AA in total defense, eighth in rushing defense and 12th in scoring defense this past season. He finished ninth in the conference with 94 tackles and added 9.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and an interception. Camacho's exploits on the field and in the classroom recently landed him a spot on the Verizon Academic All-America first team. A two-time member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District I team, he has been nominated for the I-AA Athletic Directors Association Academic All-Star team. The New York City native has earned a host of honors in his four years at Albany, including the Spellman Achievement Award (four years), Dean’s List (every semester), NEC Academic Honor Roll (three years) and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll (twice). Camacho, who plans to work in investment banking and then return to graduate school for his MBA, is a Business Administration/Finance major who has compiled a 3.79 grade point average.

Fairleigh Dickinson senior midfielder Johnny David (Hillside, NJ/Hillside) is recognized for his efforts in men’s soccer. The 2003 NEC Player of the Year, David ranked second on the team with 13 points and helped lead the Knights to their unprecedented fourth consecutive league title. All three of his goals were game winners, including the decisive strike in the finale of the Yale Soccer Classic, for which he was named Tournament Most Valuable Player. The honors kept rolling in for the Hillside, NJ native at the conclusion of the season. David was named a Third Team All-American by College Soccer News one day after being tabbed to the adidas/NSCAA all-Mid-Atlantic region first team. A three-time all-NEC performer, David was also selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District II team. David is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Honor Society and has recorded a 3.51 grade point average as a Psychology major.

Central Connecticut State junior goaltender Sabrina Mariani (Quebec, Canada/Bishop Whelan) is the recipient of the women’s soccer scholar-athlete award. Her outstanding play between the pipes was a key factor in the Blue Devils defending their conference title. Mariani, who made a save on the decisive penalty kick after shutting out Sacred Heart through two overtimes in the championship match, was named Most Valuable Player of the NEC Tournament. She ranked second in the league with seven shutouts and was third in the conference with a 1.12 goals against average. On a grander scale, Mariani was recently named a Verizon Second Team Academic All-American coming off her selection to the Verizon Academic All-District first team.
