Emmitsburg, MD -- Monmouth University won the 2005 Northeast Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Mount St. Mary’s University at the Morgan Track in Emmitsburg, Md., on Sunday. The Hawks have now won two straight NEC titles and four overall.
Monmouth’s 181 points were 50 ahead of second-place Long Island (131). St. Francis (Pa.) (125), Robert Morris (92), Mount St. Mary’s (85), Sacred Heart (83), Quinnipiac (43), Fairleigh Dickinson (33), St. Francis (N.Y.) (16), Central Connecticut State (14) and Wagner (10) round out the field.
St. Francis (Pa.) senior Ryan Sheehan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) earned the 2005 Most Valuable Performer honors after winning both the 5,000m and 10000m run. Sheehan won the 5,000m on Sunday with a time of 14:45.37 after taking home the 10,000m title yesterday with a time of 32:02.43.
Sacred Heart junior Evan Lasher (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) earned 2005 Outstanding Field Performer honors after winning the discus and hammer throw while finishing second in the shot put. Lasher broke the conference record with a throw of 53.35m in the discus on Sunday, breaking the old mark of 51.94 set by Tom Carey of St. Francis (Pa.) in 2002. He won the hammer throw yesterday with a toss of 52.96m and finished in second in the shot put with a mark of 16.00m.
Long Island junior Michael Hillian (Voorhees, N.J./East Carolina) earned 2005 Outstanding Track Performer honors after winning winning the 200m and 400m dash while anchoring LIU’s first-place 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. Hillan ran the 200 in a time of 21.08s and won the 400 with a mark of 48.81s.
Monmouth freshman Christian Keller (Matawan, N.Y./Matawan) earned 2005 Rookie of the Meet honors after finishing second in the hammer throw (49.90m), fourth in the javelin (55.90m), sixth in the shot put (15.25m) and seventh in the discus (44.91m).
St. Francis (Pa.) senior Bret Burns (Kingstown, Ontario/Frontenac) won the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:16.30 while teammate Michael Tilger (Collegeville , Pa./Archbishop Carroll) won the 1,500m (3:57.85). Long Island’s Shaun Johnson (Ontario, Canada/Ryerson Polytech) won the 100m dash (10.72s) while Mount St. Mary’s junior Devin Barry (Freehold, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) won the 110m hurdles (14.29s). In the 800m, Andrew Maloney (Toronto, Ont./St. Michael’s) of St. Francis (Pa.) took the title (1:51.74) while Long Island’s Bryan Steele (Gaithersburg, M.d./Gaithersburg) won the 400m hurdles (53.18). Monmouth’s Nicholas Gilanelli (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) won the pole vault (4.20m), teammate Bobby Smith (Hopatcong, N.J./Hopatcong) took the javelin (67.16m) and Robert Morris sophomore Adam Woodford (Downington, Pa./Downington) won the triple jump (14.84m).
Long Island won both the 4x100m relay (41.51) and the 4x400m relay (3:13.76). Monmouth head coach Joe Compagni was named the NEC Men’s Coach of the Year.
