Quinnipiac Closes Season With Loss To Miami (OH) At NCAA Baseball Regional

Austin, TX -- The Miami University (Ohio) baseball team scored 13 runs in the second and third innings to lift the RedHawks to a 35-8 win over Quinnipiac University in day two of the NCAA regionals on Saturday, June 4 at Disch-Falk Field. The Bobcats were eliminated from the tournament and finish the season 26-24 overall, while the RedHawks are now 45-17 and will advance to play the loser of tonight’s Arkansas/Texas game.

Miami got things started in the top of the first inning as John Slone reached on an error and scored on a triple by Paul Frietch to make it 1-0.

Quinnipiac answered with two runs in the home half of the first. Singles by Ryan Rizzo (East Northport, N.Y.), Bryan Sabatella (Wading River, N.Y.), and Brien Magee (Stamford, Conn.) loaded the bases for Kevin MacIlvane (Windsor, Conn.), who cracked a two-run single to center to give the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.

The RedHawks regained the lead in the second scoring five runs on a two-run single by Ryne Robinson, RBI singles by Brandon Hillier and Slone, and the final run of the inning scored on a fly out with multiple throwing errors to make it 6-2.

In the third, Quinnipiac starter Chris Wakefield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) was lifted for Ari Kafka (Sharon, Mass.). Wakefield went two innings allowed eight runs, six earned on seven hits.

The RedHawks added eight runs in the third powered by a two-run triple by Tyler Tabler, and a two-run single by Hillier. Miami cracked 10 hits in the second and third.

Quinnipiac scored a run in the third as Tim Binkoski (North Haven, Conn.) cracked a triple down the right-field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sabatella to make it 14-3.

The RedHawks added five runs on five hits in the fourth and a pair of runs on a two-run homer by Frietch to stretch it to 21-3.

The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the bottom sixth inning. Josh Charry (Chappaqua, N.Y.) hit a ground-rule double and came around to score on a single by Ricky Coppola (Orange, Conn.). Quinnipiac added the second run of the inning when Coppola scored on an RBI single by Rizzo to cut it to 21-5.

Miami added single runs in the seventh and eighth.

In the seventh, Quinnipiac notched a run as Sabatella singled and scored on a double by Magee. The Bobcats scored a pair of runs in the eighth. John Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) and Rizzo singled and that was followed by an RBI double by Binkoski. Rizzo scored on an infield single by Magee to cut it to 23-8.

Miami closed out their day by scoring 12 runs in the ninth to make it 35-8.

For Quinnipiac, Rizzo was 3-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Magee was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Sabatella was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Delaney and Binkoski had a pair of hits.

The two teams combined for 50 hits, a new NCAA regional record. Miami set a new NCAA regional record with 32 runs scored.

With his one RBI, Sabatella finished the season as the 2005 Northeast Conference Triple Crown winner.
