Long Island Wins First NEC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship

Emmitburg, MD -- Long Island University won its first Northeast Conference Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday. The event was held at the Morgan Track on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md.

Long Island won the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay, to capture its first-ever conference title. LIU finished with 145.5 points, just 4.5 points ahead of second-place St. Francis (Pa.) (141). Monmouth (107), Robert Morris (95), Mount St. Mary’s (85), Sacred Heart (68.5), Quinnipiac (61), Wagner (42), Fairleigh Dickinson (35), St. Francis (N.Y.) (31) and Central Connecticut State (6) rounded out the field.

Long Island sophomore Aisha Thomas (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) (pictured) earned the 2006 Most Valuable Performer honors after winning both the 100m and 200m dash while also helping the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams to first-place finishes. Thomas won the 100m dash with a time of 12.13s while taking the 200m with a time of 24.49s. Thomas won both events last year as well. She was also named the 2006 Outstanding Track Performer at the meet.

Mount St. Mary’s junior Nina Victorin (Nyack, N.Y./Nyack) won 2006 Outstanding Field Performer honors after winning both the shot put and the discus. Victorin captured the shot put on Saturday with a mark of 15.06m. She earned the win in the discus today with a toss of 45.67m.

Long Island freshman Tavia Burke (St. Catherine, Jamaica/St. Andrews) won 2006 Rookie of the Meet honors after finishing second in both the 100m and 200m dash. In the 100, she had a time of 12.28s while she finished the 200m with a mark of 24.99s. She also ran for LIU in the 4x100m relay.

Quinnipiac senior Kaitlyn Gwyther (Madison, N.H./Kennett) had an outstanding day, winning the 1500m and 5000m run. Her time of 16:33.09 in the 5000m run broke the conference record by 50 seconds. She finished the 1500 with a time of 4:33.22. Monmouth’s Toria Williams (Brown Mills, N.J./Pemberton Township) won the 400m dash with a time of 55.84s while Long Island’s Jaimie Smith (Burtonsville, Md./Paint Branch) won the 800m with a time of 2:13.39. Mount St. Mary’s senior Shannon Norris (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) won the 100m hurdles (14.32) for the second straight year while Monmouth’s Latasha Dickson (Aberdeen, N.J./Matawan) won the 400m hurdles (1:01.82). Sacred Heart junior Kathleen Duffy (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) won the 3000m steeplechase (11:00.83). Robert Morris senior Ericka Frazee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) won the high jump (1.64m) while teammates Brittany Humphress won the triple jump (11.95m) and Stephanie Kuhn won the Javelin (45.74m).

Long Island won both the 4x100m relay (47.06) and the 4x400m relay (3:46.48). Long Island head coach Julia Sandiford was named the NEC Women’s Coach of the Year.
