New Britain, CT -- Led by seniors Jacob Gurzler (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) and Keith Bushey (Wallingford, CT/Chesire Academy), Quinnipiac won its second straight Northeast Conference Men’s Cross Country title and third in the last four years. The pair of Bobcat seniors finished 1-2, with Gurzler, who navigated New Britain’s Stanley Quarter Park 8K course in 26:10.6, winning the event by just over 14 seconds. Quinnipiac junior Terence Moriarty (Rockville Centre, NY.South Side) placed third, while Wagner senior Mouhamed Halwani (Staten Island, NY/Xaverian) and Sacred Heart junior John Kenworthy (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) rounded out the top-five.
Quinnipiac had four runners place in the top-14, finishing with 31 points. Monmouth took second with 84 points, and Sacred Heart placed third with 95 points. Mount St. Mary’s (108) came in fourth, while St. Francis (PA) completed the top-five with a 133-point effort. Wagner (151), Robert Morris (178), Central Connecticut (185), Fairleigh Dickinson (235), Long Island (268) and St. Francis (NY), which had 285 points, closed out the field.
Gurzler was named the NEC Outstanding Performer, while Wagner’s Derek Rammelkamp (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) took home NEC Freshman of the Year honors. Rammelkamp completed the run in 27:21.5, finishing 19th. Quinnipiac’s Ed O’Connor picked up his second straight NEC Coach of the Year award.
In addition to having the top-three finishers, the Bobcats placed a fourth runner – sophomore Tyler Dinnan (Juneau, A/Juneau-Douglas) – on the all-conference team. Bushey’s final time was 26:24.8, and Moriarty finished in 26:26.4. Dinnan placed ninth with a 26:54.2 effort.
Monmouth’s second place effort was led by Peter Forgach (Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank Catholic). The sophomore placed eighth, completing the course in 26:51.3. Seniors Matt Caporaso (Matawan, NJ/Old Bridge) and Randy Hadzor (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) joined Forgach on the all-conference team. Caporazo came in 11th with a 26:58.2 performance, while Hadzor was 14th with a 27:05.6 effort.
Kenworthy (26:30.2) and David Jones (Ballston Lake, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) paced Sacred Heart to its third place finish. Jones, a junior, came in 12th at 27:00.7.
The five remaining all-conference performers each represented a separate school. Halwani’s 26:27.0 effort led Wagner, while sixth and seventh place finishers John Balouris (Allison Park, PA/Shaler) (26:36.5), a senior, and Matthew Logie (Germantown, MD/Northwest) (26:42.5), a junior, led St. Francis (PA) and Mount St. Mary’s. Robert Morris received a 10th place finish from senior Phillips Thompson (New Castle, PA/Shenango), who completed the course in 26:55.5. Central Connecticut David Hunt (New Milford, CT/New Milford) completed the all-conference team. The junior placed 13th with a 27:02.5 time on his home course.
