Sacred Heart Captures First Ever NEC Men’s Golf Championship

Monmouth’s Anthony Campanile Wins Second Individual Title

Hershey, PA -- Sacred Heart captured its first ever NEC men’s golf championship after firing a record-setting 54-hole total of 870. The Pioneers’ second round 280 set the conference’s 18-hole record, while the team’s score of 577 through the first two days of competition broke the league’s 36-hole mark. First year head coach Ed Connolly earned 2008 NEC Coach of the Year honors for his efforts. Long Island (303-296-294) and Central Connecticut State (293-300-302) finished second and third, respectively, carding scores of 893 and 895, while Mount St. Mary’s (296-298-302-896) and 2007 champion Monmouth (304-289-304-897) rounded out the top five. Robert Morris (295-294-309) placed sixth, posting a three-round score of 898, while last season’s runner-up Saint Francis (PA) (300-307-295) finished seventh with a 902. Fairleigh Dickinson (304-299-302-905), Quinnipiac (311-300-301-912) and Wagner (326-331-326-983) finished eighth, ninth and tenth, respectively, while St. Francis (NY) (342-344-357) rounded out the field of eleven with a 1043.

Monmouth senior Anthony Campanile (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) finished his career in much the same way as he began it, capturing his second individual title. Campanile, who as a freshman earned first place honors at the 2005 championships, carded rounds of 70, 71 and 71 en route to a three-round, four-under par 212. Sacred Heart junior Patrick Fillian (Tinton Falls, NJ/St. Rose) finished second after posting a three-round, three-under par 213 (71-71-71), while Central Connecticut State senior Matt McClure (Orangeville, Ontario/Westside Secondary) (70-72-73) and Saint Francis (PA) senior Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) (72-72-71) tied for third with a one-under par 215.

Fairleigh Dickinson freshman Robert Cerabone (Commack, NY) (72-72-72) and Long Island freshman Rocky Co (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Robert) (70-70-76) tied for fifth with an even-par 216, while day two leader Adam Petrasovic (Tecumseh, Ontario/St. Annes), of Sacred Heart, placed seventh with a 217 (72-68-77). Mount St. Mary’s senior Kevin Farrell (LeMoyne, PA/Trinity) (73-72-75), CCSU junior Tim Buczak (Meriden, CT/Xavier) (75-71-74) and Sacred Heart senior Tommy Campbell (Wall, NJ/Wall) (77-70-73) rounded out the tournament’s top finishers, completing play tied for eighth with a three-day total of 220. The top-10 finishers at this season’s championships earned all-NEC honors.
