Wagner-Duquesne Box Score
Staten Island, NY - There were high expectations on Grymes Hill heading into Saturday’s Northeast Conference regular season finale, and Wagner did not disappoint.
The Seahawks needed a win to clinch their first-ever NEC crown, and they grinded out a 23-17 victory over 2011 NEC co-champ Duquesne. Wagner will share the NEC title with Albany, but it will be the Green & White who represent the NEC in the upcoming FCS playoffs based on their head-to-head win over the Great Danes.
Wagner junior running back Dominque Williams totaled 133 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns. Twenty-nine of those yards came on drive-extending receptions as the Seahawks marched for the go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter. Williams capped the 11-play, 81-yard march by rushing for a one-yard touchdown that gave his team a 21-17 lead with 5:54 remaining.
A safety only 1:36 later pushed Wagner’s advantage to 23-17 and Torian Phillips all but sealed the win by intercepting Sean Patterson with 1:21 left on the clock.
