7/10/2006

printable version

The Quinnipiac University women's track and field team recently garnered national academic honors by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for carrying a 3.3 GPA, while the men’s squad earned recognition for posting a 3.03 GPA. Katie Gwyther individually received national academic honors from the organization for posting a GPA of 3.486. Overall, only 61 women's teams and 247 individuals were honored by the USTFCCCA. On the men’s side, only 19 teams combined to earn academic recognition.

Teams needed to carry a team GPA of a 3.0 or higher while individuals needed at least a 3.2 GPA to be nominated.  The Quinnipiac women’s squad was one of only three teams in the NEC to receive this recognition from the national organization, while the men’s team was the lone league representative.

The Bobcat women were also honored as an Academic All-American Team for the fifth time in six years during the cross country season last fall, while the QU men were honored as an Academic All-American Team for the fifth straight year during the last cross country season. Both the men’s and women's cross country and indoor track teams received Public Recognition Awards by the NCAA for placing in the top 10 percent nationally of the latest Academic Progress Rates.

The women's cross country and track teams have also won the last two Positive Play Cups in the three-year history of the program. The mission of Positive Play for Quinnipiac student-athletes is to "enhance their own lives and the lives of others by attending life-skills programs and contributing to the campus and neighborhood communities."

The 2006 Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s cross country season begins on September 1 at the Stony Brook Invitational.
