Brooklyn, NY -- The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches has named two St. Francis (NY) water polo players to the NCAA Division I All-American Team as Honorable Mentions. This is the second time junior Botond Szalma has been named an All-American and the first time for senior Bogdan Petrovic.
“It is a testament to teamwork that we were fortunate to have two players named All- American this year,” said Coach Carl Quigley. “Bogdan and Botond could not have received this remarkable honor without their unselfish play and hard work as well as the play of their teammates throughout the 2006 season.”
Water Polo is a sport that is dominated by teams from California. During the season, St. Francis was the only East Coast team to crack the top ten and break the California monopoly. Szalma and Petrovic are two of only seven players from the East Coast named to the list of All-Americans, building on the St. Francis reputation as one of the premier programs in the country.
“This award means a lot to me, however, according to my standards, the individual accomplishment is worth a bit less then team success,” said Szalma. “I believe that most of my teammates should have received similar awards.”
“Mikhail (Klochkov, Coach) and I are very proud of our water polo team’s accomplishments this past season and look forward to a successful 2007 campaign,” added Coach Quigley.
The Terriers finished the 2006 season with a 22-5 record. They captured the ECAC Championship for the third straight year as well as the Northern Conference Championship before finishing third at the Eastern Championships.
