Robert Morris kicked off the 2012 campaign in grand fashion by defeating Bellarmine 9-8 and UMBC 10-8 on the road. Thanks to the back-to-back wins, RMU was rewarded by having a hand in all three weekly honors. Junior attackman Jake Hayes captured the title of NEC Offensive Player of the Week by totaling seven points. He scored three goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist in the 9-8 win over the Knights, before scoring once and helping out on two others in the two-goal victory over the Retrievers. Teammate and first-year netminder Matt Bukovac was stellar in his first start against UMBC, earning both defensive player and co-rookie honors after stonewalling the Retrievers 16 times and allowing just six even-strength goals. He also helped hold them to a 2-for-8 clip on the man-up. Joining him in sharing the rookie award, Bryant’s Kevin Massa dominated the faceoff X as the Bulldogs went 1-1. The Huntington, NY native won a combined 27 of his 41 attempts in games against #19 Colgate (L, 10-8) and Saint Joseph’s (W, 11-7), finishing the two-game slate with a staggering .659 FO win percentage. He also scooped up 16 ground balls, 10 of which came in the win over Saint Joe’s while going 16-for-20 against the Hawks.

NEC Men's Basketball Weekly Release (2/20)

NEC play is hotter than ever with just one weekend remaining in the regular season. LIU Brooklyn continued its winning ways behind the helping hand of this week’s Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week, Jason Brickman, who dished out 12.5 assists per game, including a career-high 16 in a 99-89 victory over Quinnipiac at home last weekend. It marked the fourth-most assists in a game in Northeast Conference history and it tied the most assists in a game in NCAA Division I basketball this season. He finished the game with 10 points to complete his third double-double of the season. Looking at the young guns, CCSU guard Kyle Vinales earned a share of his seventh rookie of the week honor after averaging 21.5 points during a 1-1 week. The Detroit, MI product highlighted his two-game slate with a 32-point outing at Robert Morris, where he scored 29 of his points in the second half, including 16 in the final four minutes. Sharing the honor with Vinales, Monmouth’s Dion Nesmith, a junior rookie, scored 16.5 PPG in a pair of games, with 20 coming in a playoff-clinching win at Mount St. Mary’s, 68-66.
