A pair of sophomores claimed the latest Road Runner Sports NEC Track Athlete of the Week awards. Monmouth sprinter Geoff Navarro picked up his second men’s award this season after establishing himself at the NEC leader in the 200-meter dash. Long Island’s Jessie Gaines, the 2009 NEC Indoor MVP, captured the women’s award for the first time this season thanks her Metropolitan title in the 55-meter hurdles. Each responsible for a conference-best performance, senior high jumpers Dean Brown (St. Francis [NY]) and Brittany Dexter (Sacred Heart) are the men’s and women’s Road Runner Sports Field Athletes of the Week. Meanwhile, both rookie awards makes their way up to New England where Bryant distance runner Deirdre Doyle enjoys her second women’s honor and Central Connecticut State sprinter Aaron Radden becomes the first Blue Devil this season to receive a weekly accolade.
Northeast Conference Track & Field Release (1/26)
The latest installment of the Road Runner Sports weekly track & field awards program honors a trio of Monmouth Hawks along with one representative from each of the Northeast Conference's three New York City based institutions. Monmouth is home to both the men's and women's track honorees. Sophomore Chris Rutherford posted IC4A qualifying times in both the 55-meter hurdles and 500-meter race at last weekend's Albany Great Dane Classic while senior Michelle Losey sprinted to program records in the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes. Losey's freshman teammate Emily MacEwen claims the women's rookie award for her performance in the 1000-meter run. Wagner senior long jumper Amanda Gland rounds out the list of women's honorees after taking over the NEC lead in her signature event. Meanwhile, on the men's side, St. Francis (NY) senior Dean Brown claimed the field award for the second straight week after extending his league lead in the high jump. Long Island freshman Brian Richards claimed his second men's rookie honor after scoring in both the 200-meter and long jump at the Great Dane Classic.
