Loretto, PA -- Pre-race favorite Mount St. Mary’s College won the 1998 Northeast Conference Men’s Cross Country title at the Immergrun Golf Course on the campus of Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Mount St. Mary’s, behind defending individual champion and senior Daniel Kinyua’s (Embu, Kenya) 1st-place time of 25:46.57 for 8000 meters, won its fourth straight and fifth overall team title by compiling a five-score total of 46 points. The Mount also received a 2nd-place finish from junior Tim Kitching (Coffs, Harbour, Australia) in 26:47.69 and an eighth-place showing from junior Dan Shaffer (New Cumberland, PA) in 26:21.06. Kinyua also broke the course record.Saint Francis College of Pennsylvania, with three top ten finishes in sophomores Brian Sell (Woodbury, PA) and Terry Ditmars (Petrolia, Ontario) in 5th (26:03.30) and 6th (26:1.06), respectively, and a 9th-place showing from freshman Kevin Doyle (Butler, PA), finished second with 53 points. Monmouth was third with 90 points, followed by Central Connecticut (95), Maryland Baltimore County (114), Fairleigh Dickinson (146), Quinnipiac (159), Wagner (240), Robert Morris (241), Long Island (312) and St. Francis-New York (324).
Monmouth’s Felix Olivo (Secaucus, NJ) was third in 25:53.25, followed by Leo Mayo (Winsted, CT) of Central Connecticut in fourth (26:03.04), while Quinnipiac’s Roland Lavalee (Bellingham, MA) and Fairleigh Dickinson’s Ephantus Limo (Mogoto, Kenya) were 7th (26:18.60) and tenth (26:22.95), respectively.
