NEC Men's Golf Notes (9/13)

League Notes

Central Connecticut State opened the 2005-06 season with a third place finish at the Dartmouth Invitational held on Sunday and Monday. The teams played 36 holes on Sunday and 18 more to finish the tournament on Monday morning. The Blue Devils shot a three-day total of 901 (311-293-197) to finish in third place overall, three shots behind second place Dartmouth. Junior Mike Moreland (Orangeville, Canada) led the way for the Blue Devils with an eighth place finish. He shot a three-day total of 223 (79-72-72). Moreland was the top Blue Devil finisher followed closely by teammates Brendon Ray (Norfolk, MA) (ninth place, 224) and Peter Catanzaro (Greenwich, CT) (11th place, 226). Bryce Fearon (Saco, ME) finished in 17th place with a two-day total of 228 and Mike McCarthy (Peterborough, Ontario) finished in a tie for 59th place with a 264. The Blue Devils, coming off a NEC championship in the spring of 2005, play again on September 24-25 when they host the Blue Devils Invitational at Stanley Golf Course ... Fairleigh Dickinson begins the 2005-06 fall season at the St. Peter’s Invitational on Sept. 13-14 ... Long Island commences on the 2005-06 season at the Bucknell Invitational on Sept. 16-17 ... Monmouth begins the fall season at the Rutgers Invitational on Sept. 16-17 ... Mount St. Mary’s launches the fall season at the Bucknell Invitational on Sept. 16-17 ... Quinnipiac The Bobcats placed seventh out of 13 teams at the Dartmouth Invitational over this past weekend. Senior Craig Cyr (Pembroke, NH), the 2005 NEC Golfer of the Year, led the way for the Bobcats placing 11th overall with a three-round score of 226. He fired a par 71 in the final round on Monday. Steve Velardi (Hamden, CT) finished behind Cyr placing 23rd shooting a 233 (75, 78, 80). Freshman Andy Feehan (Mahopac, NY) had an impressive college debut placing 33rd with a score of 237 (78, 81, 78). Quinnipiac returns to action on Sept. 24-25 as they travel to fellow NEC school Central Connecticut for the CCSU Blue Devil Invitational ... Robert Morris compete at the Bucknell Invitational on Sept. 16-17 ... Sacred Heart finished in ninth place at the Dartmouth Invite. Sophomore Tom Campbell (Wall, NJ) was the Pioneers top-golfer with a 54 hole score of 232. Campbell fired a 77 and 72 on Sunday but came back with an 83 on Monday to fall out of the top-10 and finish tied for 21st. Campbell was tied for 8th after Sunday’s 36 holes. Freshman Matthew Belizze (North Salem, NY), competing in his first collegiate event, finished tied for 25th with a combined score of 234. Belizze shot a pair of 76 rounds on day one and hit 82 on Monday. Sacred Heart returns to action on Sept. 24-25 as it competes at the Blue Devil Invitational ... St. Francis (PA) placed second out of 16 teams at the Colgate Invitational last weekend (604). Steve Foisy (Repentigny, Quebec) opened the season with a third place finish with a two-day three-over par total of 147 on the par-72 Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton, NY. Foisy carded an even-par round of 72 in the first day of competition and followed with a 75 to finish four shots back of tournament medalist. Junior Nick Wheeler (Ingersoll, Ontario) opened with a one-under par round of 71 and was in solo second place before firing an 81 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 13th place. Sophomore Matt Gowdy (London, Ontario) tied for 16th with a nine-over par 153, while junior Mike Hammond (London, Ontario) tied for 32nd place with a 12-over 156. SFPA continues the season at the Bucknell Invite on Sept. 16-17 ... Wagner tied for 14th out of 16 teams at the Colgate Invitational this past weekend. Junior Chris DeCarlo (Manchester, CT) was the top finisher for Wagner tying for 11th overall with a +7, 151. DeCarlo equaled a career low round of 73 on day one, then followed with a 78. The Seahawks return to action at the Lehigh Don Mershon Invitational on October 9-10.
