NEC Football Notes (9/25)

Albany Ranked No. 23

With a 19-14 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday, the Great Danes became the second NEC team in league history to rank in the I-AA Sports Network national poll. CCSU gets knocked out of the poll after the loss and earning the No. 23 ranking one week ago. The league’s toughest schedule has paid off for Albany (3-1) this season. The Danes opened the season with a 17-16 win at Lehigh before falling to Fordham in week two. Last week, Albany topped then-No. 11 Delaware and this week beat CCSU. Albany wins back-to-back games versus ranked opponents for the first time in school history. CCSU received 67 points in this week’s TSN poll, while Monmouth, which improved to 4-0 on Saturday, received 14 points.

"It’s thrilling to be on any top 25 list, but of course you would like to be there at the end of the season," said UAlbany’s head coach Bob Ford, who is second among active Division I-AA head coaches with 213 career victories. "You have to be proud of this group of kids and what they achieved at this point against a high level of competition. But it’s the old cliché, we have to take one play at a time and one game at a time."

Four NEC Teams On TSN I-AA Mid Major Top-10 Poll

(The Sports Network) - Albany scored a win in the week’s biggest game by knocking off Central Connecticut State, 19-14. The Great Danes jumped over the Blue Devils and into the No. 2 position in the top 10 with the victory. Monmouth is at No. 3 after moving up two places on the heels of a 17-12 victory at Colgate. Dayton remains at No. 4, while Central Connecticut State is down three pegs to No. 5 after losing to the Great Danes.

After a bye week, San Diego remains at No. 1. The Toreros picked up 21 of a possible 25 first-place votes and 244 total points to stay at No. 1. San Diego travels to Davidson to begin its Pioneer Football League schedule and try to build on an 11-game winning streak on Saturday.

Duquesne, Drake and Wagner hold the next three positions for the third week in a row. Robert Morris moves into the rankings at No. 9, while Valparaiso is down a spot to No. 10. Marist drops out of the top 10.

Every team in the top 10 is in action this week, and seven squads take on a conference opponent. While there are not any games between top 10 teams, Albany gets another test with a trip to Cornell.

NEC Football Review: Albany Tops CCSU; Wagner, Monmouth Improve to 4-0 On the Season

In the 2006 conference opener, and perhaps the most important early-season game in league history, Albany (3-1, 1-0) fended off Central Connecticut State (3-1, 0-1), 19-14, in a defensive battle at Albany, NY. The Great Danes held the NEC's leading rusher, Justise Hairston, to just 58 yards on the ground as Albany tops its second straight I-AA top-25 opponent. Eric Neugebauer's 27-yard interception for a touchdown with 1:32 remaining in the game seal the victory.

Monmouth improves to 4-0 on the season with a 17-12 defeat of Patriot League foe Colgate at Hamilton, NY. First-year running back David Sinisi scored two touchdowns for the Hawks and the MU defense allowed only one Colgate offensive score early in the fourth quarter.

Wagner also remains unbeaten this season, improving to 4-0 for the first time since 1995, with a 34-0 shutout of Saint Peter's on Staten Island. The Seahawks produced a season high 513 yards of total offense, including 119 yards rushing from tailback Warren Barnett and 111 yards receiving by wideout Chris Turner. The Seahawks held the Peacocks to zero yards rushing.

Robert Morris (2-2) won back-to-back games, knocking off Division III Rowan at Joe Walton Stadium. The Colonials held Rowan to negative-19 yards total offense in the shutout win. RMU returner Mario Hines netted a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Saint Francis (1-3) wide receivers Michael Caputo (198) and Luke Palko (222) tied the NCAA Division I-AA record for most career catches for two players on the same team, but it was all spoiled by La Salle scoring 10 unanswered fourth quarter points to defeat the Red Flash, 24-21, at DeGol Field.

Sacred Heart (1-3) led most of the game against Duquesne, but fell to the Dukes, 24-21, at Pittburgh, PA. SHU quarterback Tyler Arciaga threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Stony Brook (0-4) managed only 34 rushing yards, falling to No. 9 UMass, 48-7, at Amherst, MA..

Quick Notes

• Saint Francis (PA) receiver Michael Caputo became with NEC’s all-time career leader in receiving yards. Caputo (2,876) added 88 yards on Sept. 23 versus La Salle, passing Monmouth’s Miles Austin (2,867)

• For the first time in league history, the NEC beat an Atlantic 10 opponent as Albany knocked off Delaware, 17-10, on September 16.

• The NEC finished the non-conference season with a 2-2 record versus Patriot League teams. Albany topped Lehigh on Sept. 2 and Monmouth beat Colgate on Sept. 23.

• Saint Francis (PA) senior Anthony Doria became the second quarterback in NEC history to pass for 7,000 career yards. With 7,194 for his career, Doria needs just 61 more yards to become the NEC’s all-time leading, passing Robert Morris signal caller Tim Levcik (1998-2001), who many consider the best quarterback in NEC history.

• With 226 yards in a win over Saint Peter’s on September 16, Monmouth’s Brian Boland became the fourth quarterback in league history to throw for 6,000 career yards. Boland now stands in third behind SFPA’s Anthony Doria (7,194) and RMU’s Tim Levcik (7,255).

• Albany junior linebacker Colin Disch gained some revenge for the Disch family as the Great Danes beat national-power Delaware on September 16. Colin’s brother, Ryan, started at linebacker for Colgate in the 2003 I-AA National Championship loss to Delaware.

• Saint Francis (PA) tailback Todd Harris now ranks fifth on the all-time career NEC rushing list with 2,575 yards after gaining 134 yards versus La Salle on Sept. 23. Harris stands behind Albany’s Gary Jones (2002-03), who gained 3,033 yards.

Palko, Caputo - Tie NCAA Receptions Mark

Saint Francis senior wide receivers Michael Caputo and Luke Palko tied the NCAA Division I-AA record for most career catches for two players on the same team, despite a 24-21 loss to La Salle last Saturday.
