Tournament Overview
The 2008 NEC Women’s Basketball Tournament takes on a slightly different format than that of the past three years. The tournament will remain an eight-team format, but the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be played at predetermined host Long Island. The host of the championship game will be the highest remaining seed. Unlike in previous years, teams will not be reseeded following the quarterfinals.
NEC Tournament quarterfinal play commences on Saturday, March 8, followed by the semifinal round on Sunday, March 9. The NEC will hold the league’s 21st annual women’s championship game on Sunday, March 16. For the first time in tournament history, the final game will be played in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. Tip-off is 3:00 pm.
This year's tournament format featuring a single campus site hosting the quarterfinals and semifinals, followed by the highest remaining seed hosting the championship game was also utilized in 1998 (hosted by CCSU) and from 2002-04 (hosted by Wagner). The NEC employed a high seed hosting format from 1991-97 and 2005-07, had the tournament contested at one campus site (Wagner, in 1999), as well as at a municipal arena (Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton in 2000-01).
