Susan Robinson Fruchtl's second season at the helm saw the Red Flash reach the Northeast Conference title game, a place they hadn't been since 2005 when they won the last of nine titles in 10 years.
Saint Francis returns its entire starting five from the team that accounted for a 7.5-game turnaround and halted the storied program's three-year postseason drought. Coupled with the fact that Saint Francis will host the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the NEC Tournament, the fans in Loretto have to be thinking back to the glory years when the Red Flash won six of their record nine NEC crowns on their home floor.
"We're very thankful for being given the opportunity to host the tournament and we want to put on a great show," said Robinson Fruchtl. "A lot of former players who are still in contact with the program have made us aware of their tradition. You want to be proud of the tradition and not afraid of it. We still have a lot of work to do and certainly have not arrived yet. We are trying to compete for that championship which would be the first for these players."
Samantha Leach, Britney Hodges, Allison Daly, and Brittany Lilley each averaged no fewer than 11.0 points per game for a scoring offense (67.5 ppg) whose production ranked second to only NEC champion Sacred Heart. Leach (12.7 ppg), a second team all-NEC guard, was the team's leading scorer and the only player to start all 32 contests. Hodges wasn't far behind, totaling 12.3 points over a team-high 32.2 minutes per outing. All four ladies along with center Janie Killian shot better than 40 percent from the floor.
Rebounding is an area where the Red Flash have drastically improved since Robinson Fruchtl's arrival. Saint Francis (PA) ranked second in rebounding margin last year after finishing last in the NEC the year prior to the head coach's arrival.
