Five Questions With Chris Birrell, Bryant

1. You began your career at Bryant competing at the Division II level, then were part of the program’s first Division I team last season. What surprised you the most about the transition?

Going from the Division II level to Division I, the thing that surprised me the most would have to be the level of competition. I knew there were going to be better players in Division I but experiencing it first hand is a huge difference. There are bigger and stronger players that present an entirely different game plan to play against.

2. In his short time at the University, what impact has Coach O’Shea made in shaping the future success of the Bryant hoops program?

Coach O’Shea has played at the Division I level, coached at the Division I level, and knows what it takes to win at that level. The biggest impact I feel he has made is bringing in Division I players. This year he brought in seven freshman and two transfers from Division I programs. Getting Division I players to come and play at Bryant without having the chance to compete in the playoffs for the next three years is no small feat.

3. What aspect of your game will show the most improvement this season? What part of your game is most underrated?

Coming off knee surgery, I feel the aspect of my game that has improved is my ball handling. For the three months I was unable to run. I could really only dribble a ball and I have seen a difference now because of that. I feel that my defense is underrated. I may not be the fastest player but I can stay in front of my man and am always where I should be on the court.

4. In its initial foray into NEC competition a year ago, Bryant finished with a respectable 6-8 record. What will it take for the program to become a contender in the conference?

Being able to win home games is always important. If we want to be at the top of the NEC its simple - we need to take care of business at home.

5. Who was the toughest individual player you were matched up against in the NEC last season and why?

The point guard from Wagner (Justin Drummond) was a very tough matchup for me. He was a 6’6” point guard which is rare today. He could handle the ball against pressure and make open shots.
