NEC Community Showcase

The Northeast Conference, its member institutions and student-athletes have made community involvement an important piece of its mission.

• For the second straight year, Sacred Heart was awarded the NEC Building Communities award. The award recognizes the institution which demonstrates the highest dedication to making an impact in the community through the efforts of its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Over the course of the 2011-12 academic year, Sacred Heart donated 6,625 hours of community service. In total, Conference members logged over 26,000 hours of community service.

• The Northeast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) made its annual visit to the Cancer Recovery Foundation in Hershey, PA this past February. NEC SAAC members assembled over 2,000 care packages to be delivered to pediatric cancer patients through the Foundation’s Bear-Able Gift Bag program.

• The SAAC participated in “Penny Wars” for a third straight year to support the children’s Cancer Recovery Foundation. The conference-wide community service fund-raising initiative raised $8,185 with Robert Morris receiving the Penny War trophy by raising $2,787.

• Fairleigh Dickinson senior tennis player Julia Prantl was named the 2011-12 NEC SAAC Student-Athlete of the Year. Prantl helped lead the Knights to their second NEC title and was named a second team All-NEC singles player this past season. Her commitment to her community was evident by her participation in Habitat for Humanity, SAAC Penny Wars and a year-long fundraiser for Operation Smile. A Business Management major, she graduated in May with a 3.94 GPA

To assist in raising breast cancer awareness, NEC women’s volleyball teams supported "Dig Pink" and women’s basketball teams participated in the WBCA’s "Pink Zone" promotion. The NEC has also partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs and other youth-based charitable organizations throughout the league’s footprint.
