Around the Northeast Conference
Week 5 in 5 Sentences
Sacred Heart and Robert Morris both notched notable road victories to shake up the NEC race. The Pioneers ended a seven-game losing streak to Central Connecticut in the annual Constitution State rivalry game while the Colonials stormed the Jersey Shore and earned a 23-20 win over previously red-hot Monmouth. Duquesne turned away Bryant to win its fourth straight and move to 2-0 in league play. UAlbany kicked off its NEC slate with a win at Saint Francis (PA). Wagner fell to Cornell in the lone non-conference game of the Week 5 docket.
The Week Ahead
All nine NEC teams will be in action during Week 6, but fewer than half will be taking part in conference play. The Keystone State Clash between Robert Morris and Saint Francis (PA) is one of only two league games on the docket. Duquesne will travel to UAlbany for the other league game, which will feature a pair of NEC unbeatens. Monmouth and Wagner will both host Patriot League members with the former welcoming Colgate to the Jersey Shore while the latter entertains Georgetown on Grymes Hill. Sacred Heart looks for its second win this season over an Ivy League member. Central Connecticut will visit Massachusetts, which is transitioning to the FBS level.
NEC-TV Timeout!
After televising games in back-to-back-to-back weeks, the NEC-TV football schedule will embark on a three-week hiatus before resuming on Oct. 29. The next telecast will be live from Grymes Hill where Wagner will host Albany at 1:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 29. The following week (Nov. 5), NEC-TV will broadcast the heavyweight bout between Central Connecticut and Robert Morris live from hard-hittin’ New Britain.
Duquesne Rides Four-game Win Streak into Albany
The Dukes have kicked it into high gear. Duquesne, which posted a 7-4 record last year and was coming off its best season as a NEC member, earned the No. 2 ranking in the 2011 NEC preseason coaches’ poll, but is currently ahead of that projection. Since a season-opening one-point setback at Bucknell, Duquesne has put together four consecutive victories. The Dukes started the streak by downing Pioneer League members Dayton and Valpo in back-to-back weeks before entering into conference play. After opening their NEC slate with a convincing win at Saint Francis (PA), Duquesne outlasted Bryant, 31-28, at home in what began as a battle between two 3-1 teams. The Dukes have six more NEC contests remaining with its next test coming on the road at UAlbany. Duquesne’s Week 6 opponent appears to have found its stride as the Danes have won back-to-back games following an 0-2 start.
Robert Morris Starts Fresh
Heading into Week 5, the Colonials hadn’t won a game since last November 6. After falling at North Dakota State in the 2010 FCS playoffs, Robert Morris opened the 2011 campaign by losing its first three. Joe Walton’s team headed into its bye week coming off an excruciating 13-12 loss at Morgan State during which it failed to convert the game-tying PAT late in the fourth quarter. As it turned out, the Colonials’ struggles were nothing a week of rest and the start of NEC pay couldn’t cure. Robert Morris topped previously red-hot Monmouth, which had earned back-to-back road wins over Villanova and NEC preseason favorite Central Connecticut, for its 13th victory in its last 14 league games. With its 0-3 non-league showing in the rear-view mirror, RMU has taken the first step forward in defending its conference crown.
Dixon Does It Again
When Connor Dixon (South Park, PA/South Park) has caught the ball this season, he’s usually found pay dirt. To be exact, forty-seven (47) percent of Dixon’s receptions this season have resulted in touchdowns. The 6-foot-5 quarterback-turned-receiver has made 17 receptions for 422 yards and eight touchdowns. In two NEC contests, Dixon has five touchdown receptions. After torching Saint Francis (PA) for a pair of long scores in Week 4, Dixon found the end zone three times in Duquesne’ Week 5 win over Bryant. The 2010 all-NEC receiver, who was granted a sixth year of eligibility due to a medical hardship waiver, totaled five catches for 71 yards and made what proved to be the game-winning 10-yard TD grab with 9:22 left to play against the Bulldogs.
Paul Can Punt!
Paul Layton (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) punted three times in Albany’s 41-20 rout of Saint Francis (PA), and all three times he pinned the Red Flash inside their own 20-yard line. Layton, who was a unanimous choice for preseason all-NEC punter, entered Week 5 as the second-leading punter in all of Division I FCS. His 46.27 yards per punt average through Week 5 currently rank him fourth amongst national leaders. The sophomore is part of the Danes’ more-than reliable kicking game. Both Layton and placekicker Herb Glass () have won the NEC Special Teams Player of the Week award this season. Glass, who is 5-for-7 on field goal attempts this season, is Albany’s all-time career leader in field goals made (31).
No-Huddle Notes
Duquesne safety Khiry Carter (Philadelphia, PA/W. Phila. Catholic) made eight stops in the Dukes’ win over Bryant and also recorded his first career sack, which forced a fumble that Duquesne turned into a touchdown one play later. … Sacred Heart won for the second straight week as sophomore QB Tim Little (Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor) again looked comfortable, tossing three touchdowns while not committing a turnover. … Duquesne quarterback Sean Patterson (Toledo, OH/St. John’s Jesuit) fired three scoring strikes against Bryant to up his league-leading total of touchdown passes to 13 over the season’s first five games. … Central Connecticut had won 15 consecutive home games, the longest active streak in FCS at the time, before suffering losses in back-to-back weeks at Arute Field.

Frazier passed for 241 yards for Monmouth, which was whistled for 13 penalties on the afternoon.
Duquesne 31, Bryant 28
Duquesne extended its win streak to four straight games while denying Bryant a chance to do the same in a NEC contest at Rooney Field. Dukes veteran wide receiver Connor Dixon, the reigning NEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, caught three touchdown passes from Sean Patterson in the 31-28 victory. Mike Croce hooked up with Jordan Harris on a 70-yard scoring play that gave Bryant a 28-24 lead with 12:41 to go in the fourth quarter, but Duquesne answered 3:19 later when a Patterson to Dixon strike capped an eight-play, 72-yard drive. Bryant’s Jordan Brown ran for 142 yards and two touchdowns to take over the NEC rushing lead.
Cornell 31, Wagner 7
Cornell sophomore quarterback Jeff Mathews threw three first-half touchdown passes as teh Big Red built a 24-0 halftime lead en-route a 31-7 victory over Wagner at Schoelkopf Field. In dropping their fourth consecutive game, the Seahawks allowed Cornell to avenge a 41-7 loss at Wagner last season. Seahawks sophomore running back Dominique Williams eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth time in his 13-game Seahawk career. MONMOUTH HAWKS
OVERALL RECORD: 2-2, 1-1 NEC
LAST WEEK: L, 23-20 vs. ROBERT MORRIS (Oct. 1) - W. Long Branch, NJ (Kessler Field)
THIS WEEK: Oct. 8 vs. Colgate, 1:00 pm - W. Long Branch, NJ (Kessler Field)
• Monmouth lost a 23-20 game at home against Robert Morris to drop to 7-10 all-time against RMU, including a 3-5 mark at home. The Colonials have won three straight in the series, including four of the last five matchups. Nine of the 17 meetings between the Colonials and Hawks have been decided by a touchdown or less, including five by a field goal or less.
•Despite suffering a pair of interceptions in the game, Monmouth still won the turnover battle, forcing four fumbles, three of which it recovered. The Hawks came into the game ranked eighth in the country in turnover margin at +5.
• Quarterback Kyle Frazier (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) went 27-of-39 passing for 241 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the game. Frazier has thrown just 13 total INTs in his career, six of which have come in games against Robert Morris. The 27 completions were a career-high for the redshirt junior, surpassing the 22 he completed in the season opener against Lehigh. He also attempted 39 passes in that game. Frazier was also Monmouth’s leading rushing with 6 carries for 37 yards and a long of 13.
• Monmouth amassed 13 penalties for 137 yards in the game against Robert Morris. None bigger than a fourth-quarter "too many men on the field" call that came with RMU punting from its own 27. The penalty gave the Colonials a first down and they would eventually score the game-winning TD on that drive. Coming into the game, Monmouth had just 14 penalties for 133 yards in the previous three contests. The penalty totals are the most for the Hawks since a 2005 victory over California (PA) in which MU had 13 penalties for 127 yards.
• Monmouth sophomore Mitchell Pollard (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) recorded a career-high 10 catches for 88 yards in the loss to RMU. Pollard became the first MU player to record 10 catches since Adam San Miguel did it in 2006. Pollard, who came into the game ranked second in the NEC in catches per game (5.66), leads the Hawks with 27 catches for 284 yards this season.
• Freshman safety Pat Gray (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) became the first Hawk to return a fumble since 2005 when he scooped up a loose ball in the third quarter and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown. The play came on a botched snap on a RMU punt and gave Monmouth a 17-10 lead. Gray leads the team in interceptions as well, with two picks in his first four collegiate games.
• MU’s defense allowed just 14 yards rushing and 225 total yards against the Colonials. RMU signal caller Jeff Sinclair was sacked four times in the game as MU recorded double-digit tackles for a loss for the second straight week (11 for a loss of 62 yards). The 14 yards rushing is the lowest allowed since a 2003 game against Saint Francis (PA) when the Red Flash had -2 yards on 26 attempts.
• Monmouth senior defensive end Ian Simon (West Windsor, NJ/Howard) recorded 1.5 sacks against Robert Morris which gives him a league-leading 3.5 sacks through four contests. As a team the Hawks have 2.0 sacks per game which leads only Bryant’s 2.2 sacks per contest (11 sacks in 5 games).
• COACH CAL’S TAKE – "We hurt ourselves too many times with penalties on both sides of the ball and in the kicking game. It either dramatically changed field position, extended their drives or made it very difficult for some of our drives in terms of getting out of a big hole. When you do those things against a quality opponent like Robert Morris, it makes it very difficult to win. It negates many of the good things that are going on out there." – head coach Kevin Callahan
