Moon Township, PA – Bryant jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, claiming the 2012 Northeast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship Title with a 12-6 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium.

With the win, the Bulldogs finish their season with a 14-4 record and their first-ever NEC Title in any sport. Mount St. Mary’s, meanwhile, falls to 6-9 overall and 1-1 in NEC Title games, winning the inaugural bout last season.

Sophomore Colin Dunster (Cos Cob, CT/Greenwich) scored four goals, including three during a 10-1 run that spanned the first and second quarters. Classmate Dan Sipperly (Greenwich, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) added three scores and an assist, while Max Weisenberg (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) chipped in two goals.

For the Mount, junior Andrew Scalley (Arnold, MD/Archbishop Spalding) led the squad with two goals and four points, while senior Brett Schmidt (Great Mills, MD/St. Mary’s Ryken) scored once and assisted on another.

Bryant controlled the pace of the game from the get-go, scoring six straight times while holding its opponents scoreless until the final minutes of the quarter, when Schmidt cashed in an unassisted strike at the 2:53 mark. The Bulldogs ended the frame up 7-1 and expanded that advantage to 10-1 following a three-goal spurt in the second.

After the break, Mount St. Mary’s started to fight back and made it a seven-goal deficit with back-to-back scores at 13:31 and 6:09. However, the Bulldog defense was up to the task and held the Mountaineers to just three goals over the remaining 21 minutes, sealing the program’s first-ever NEC Title.

In net, senior Jameson Love (Darien, CT/Darien) made five saves and helped the Bulldog defense kill off a pair of man-up opportunities (0-2). Mount sophomore Chris Klaiber (Lafayette, NY/Lafayette) recorded four saves and allowed 10 goals through 30 minutes of action before giving way to Adam Borgogelli (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian), who played the second half with seven stops and two goals surrendered.

Bryant outshot Mount St. Mary’s 49-39, including 17-4 in the first quarter and 29-12 at the end of the opening half. The Bulldogs also held a 27-19 advantage in ground balls and won 16 of the game’s 22 faceoff attempts, all of which came via freshman Kevin Massa (Huntington, NY/Elwood John Glenn).
